Every month, at new Moon, the Moon passes close to the Sun in the sky. Occasionally it actually crosses in front of the Sun as viewed from particular places on Earth, and there is an eclipse of the Sun. Here you see a partial eclipse. By a chance of nature, the Moon and the Sun appear about the same size in our sky. Though the Sun is 400 times bigger than the Moon, it is also 400 times further away.
